UV Protection - Even in winter, the sun emits harmful UV rays that can cause skin damage and fade your car's interior. Window tint blocks up to 99% of UV rays, protecting both passengers and upholstery year-round.
Glare Reduction - Winter sun tends to be lower in the sky, causing intense glare, especially when reflecting off snow to wet roads. Window tint can significantly reduce the glare, improving driving visibility and safety.
Glass Protection - In cold temperatures, window glass is more vulnerable to cracks and chips. Tint can add a protective layer, which may help prevent minor cracks from spreading.
Privacy and Security - Window tints add a layer of privacy and can make it harder for people to see inside, which can be especially helpful if you leave items in your car during holiday shopping or travel.
So, while many people think of tint as a summer-only feature, it offers year-round benefits that can enhance comfort, safety, and protection even in winter months.
Dyed film is the most basic type of tinting film for cars. It’s made by applying dye to the film. The dye absorbs sunlight, blocking some heat, though the heat-blocking effect is relatively lower compared to other films. However, it’s affordable, and since its color doesn’t change much, it’s a good choice if you want to keep costs down.
Carbon film is made using carbon and offers better heat-blocking effects than dyed film. Thanks to the properties of carbon, it effectively blocks heat, helping to reduce the rise in interior temperature. Additionally, carbon film has a matte finish that can give your car a more luxurious appearance.
Ceramic film is one of the most popular tinting films today and is made with ceramic particles. It provides excellent heat-blocking capabilities, as well as UV protection and glare reduction. Another significant advantage is that it doesn’t interfere with GPS or cell phone signals since it doesn’t contain metal.
Many people who are new to tinting are unsure of what level of tint to select. When I first got tinting, I remember just saying, “Do it to the standard most people go with.” But darker isn’t always better, and lighter isn’t always ideal either.
If the tint level is too dark, it can be challenging to maintain visibility during night driving or in bad weather conditions. Additionally, you may face legal restrictions, so keep that in mind.
A 5% tint means that only 5% of visible light passes through the glass, blocking the remaining 95%, making it very dark inside the vehicle.
A 70% tint, on the other hand, allows more visible light to pass through, making it look relatively lighter than 5%.
Many people choose different tint levels for different parts of the car: for side and rear windows, 5-15% is common, while for the front, 30-35% is popular. But ultimately, this choice depends on personal preference, so feel free to use this as a guideline.
Tinting costs can vary depending on several factors, such as the type of tint film, the size of the vehicle, and the areas needing tinting. The types of tint films are mentioned above, and the cost may vary depending on whether it’s the front windshield, rear-side windows, rear windshield, or sunroof.
For sedans and passenger cars, using the cheapest film option, it usually costs around $180, while using the most expensive film can cost around $500. The cost of tinting depends on the film type, vehicle size, and areas requiring tinting. It’s essential to choose based on your needs and budget. Additionally, consider legal visible light transmission (VLT) requirements when selecting the tint level. If you’re considering auto tinting, getting a detailed estimate from a professional shop is also a good approach.
Auto tint films don’t last forever, and their warranties vary depending on the brand and film type. Leading brands like Xpel and 3M, typically offer limited lifetime warranties. Generally, the lifespan of a tint film is around 5-7 years, but conservatively, the actual lifespan could be around 8-9 years. Since lifespan varies by film, it’s recommended to check the lifespan of the film before installation.
